Bikram vs. Barre

Some regular readers of this blog may know that my usual form of exercise is running. I actually really enjoy running (many people are completely unable to understand this statement - but it's true!). With that being said, I find it really hard to get motivated for a run in freezing cold temperatures and with a snow covered ground. So hard in fact - that I barely run in the winter. Sure there are treadmills, but that gets old really quickly. I needed a new workout.

Enter the Bikram Yoga Groupon.
One of my friends texted me "Did you see the Bikram Yoga Groupon? We should totally get it and go together and we'll both sweat ourselves skinny." I still hate her a little.
Basically the class went something like this:
after very clear instructions not to leave the room under any circumstances, I left about halfway through the class (to puke). I had to return to the class to collect my belongings and leave again, absolutely mortified. The majority of the time I spent in that room was me trying not to pass out, and I barely even attempted a yoga pose. Needless to say, I still have 19/20 classes left on that Groupon that will likely never be used.

Moving on... I needed a new workout.

Enter Barre Bee Fit (recommended by Lesley)
I attended my first Barre class this weekend and it was fabulous. The perfect combination of cardio and toning at a reasonable pace. I feel sore, a sure sign that I had a great workout. Yet, I never once felt like I was going to die, pass out, puke. I know where I'll be working out the rest of the winter - see ya later, yoga.

Keep in mind, this is completely based on my personal opinion.
I'm sure other people have had very different experiences. But here it goes -
Bikram vs. Barre Bee Fit:

Have you been to either class?
Do you have a preference?

  1. it's hard when you have a bad experience your first time trying something new. that's weird she wouldn't let you wipe your sweat! i know that most teachers want you to take childs pose if you're feeling weak. but i'm glad you liked the barre class! i wish there were more cool, new fitness classes to try here, but they're not really a gym-centric country. :)

  3. HAHAHAHA! I feel the same way about Bikram. One of my good friends just opened her own studio here in Cincinnati, so I go to be supportive, but I really don't enjoy it. Maybe I will have to check out Barre!

  4. Ok, so I've been to what SF has (the Dailey Method) and I think there may be one in Chicago and it is my FAVORITE THING OF ALL TIME. And when I did Bikram I cussed a lot and wanted to die. It was sucky and gross and just stupid. Yep, stupid. Oh and I almost died because my body couldn't cool off. Dehydrated much? Woof!

  7. Haha I feel the same way about Bikram! I made it through (once) and that was the last time I tried. I am really interested to try BBF- I'll have to look up locations!

  8. Funniest post ever. I did ONE Bikram class in Dallas, and never again. While I sweat out my body weight, I thought I was going to die several times. I have to try Barre -- been on my list for a while!

  9. Yay!! So glad you loved it! Still upset I missed your first one, however still feeling miserable and like my head is going to explode, so it was definitely best. When I start feeling better, we'll have to try and coordinate some classes!

  10. It was great meeting you this Saturday! I also usually stick to running. Though I tried Bikram twice. I got bored with the routine and also hated that I couldn't drink water or wipe my sweat. And I was a fairly sweaty beast in that hot box. Never tried Barre, though I've heard good things about it.

  11. Hahaha - this sounds like my worst nightmare!!! My friends swear by yoga, especially Bikram, and exactly what happened to you is why I have refused to ever try it!!! I am much more a pilates or ANY other kind of class person. I definitely want to try a Barre class sounds like they are an amazing workout!

  16. I've done both but in my opinion Barre wins. I'm really surprised the instructor didn't let you wipe your sweat or drink as much water as you want, for me that would make the class unbearable.

  17. oh my gosh. Who knew yoga could be so intense? And the room is seriously that hot? For a reason? WTH?

  19. I have avoided Bikram because that kind of heat combined with physical activity sounds nauseating. I just may have to try BBF!

  20. 1) This is a little bit of a test because of your trouble commenting tweet.
    2) I just tried Yoga "Body Sculpting" I'm not sure if it made me feel "sculpted" or just old, creaky, and sore. The Barre class sounds just my style. No wiping of sweat? DESPISE that rule. Blehhh.

  21. Oh crap, I bought that Groupon too! I've done a couple of hot yoga classes that I liked, but never a 90 min one - I'm kind of fearing for my life. There's a great hot studio, TruHarmony, in Chicago that's much more laid back and enjoyable if you ever decide to give it another shot. I've heard lots of great things about BBF. Glad you like it!

  22. That cartoon made me laugh really loud in my cubicle!!! I've been to both and Bikram takes a bit to get used to but once you do, it's invigorating. I agree though that it feels like a form of torture. I'm been doing pilates reformer for the last 6 months and it's seriously amazing. That combined with a few days of cardio is whipping my bod into shape. I highly recommend.

  23. This was hilarious to read, though I'm sure at the time of your bikram class you were not laughing. :) I actually love bikram, but don't think the room ever really gets as hot at my gym as other studios, and the instructor is great and really encouraging. I feel like I've had a massage after! But I've never tried barre, I'd like to!
