When it comes to new things, my motto is "don't knock it 'til you try it". That is unless that new thing is something like roller coasters, sky diving, or anything that involves speed & height. Then definitely knock it right away...
Anyway, I have been seeing green smoothies everywhere. It's often referred to as "the green monster smoothie". I'm assuming this is due to it's frightening appearance. At first I thought "that looks absolutely disgusting, there's no way I'd drink something that color" and "I'm not quite sure why anyone would drink leaves, seriously gross" but then I read up a bit on green smoothies and decided "hmm maybe it's not so bad".
So, I gave the green drink a try - and it really is good! Spinach has such a mild flavor that it can hardly be detected, and the sweetness of the fruit takes the spotlight. Also - SO many nutrients, barely any calories, zero fat, and it's filling! No wonder this drink is all the rage. I made two versions: (1) strawberries and mango (2) banana and mango. I preferred the addition of banana. It made the drink a bit sweeter and creamier; however, any combination of fruits would work. Keep in mind that if you add darker fruits - your drink may be a bit more brown in color, but the taste will still be great!
I also tried to give up coffee and substitute this drink for my morning cup of joe.
That was a huge fail.
I'm thinking it's more of an afternoon drink anyway :)

let's rewind a few weeks, shall we? i'm making a smoothie in the kitchen, minding my own business when my boyfriend walks in...surveys what's going on and says "ewwwww. why are you putting LEAVES in that!?" i said "don't worry about it st louis, have some bacon". i really like to harass him for his midwestern roots.
ReplyDeletev interesting. i need to detox after the weekend of food i just had.. this would be an awesome afternoon snack. xoxo jillian:: cornflake dreams
ReplyDeleteI've been making the exact same smoothie but with kale and I love it. I just have to drink it through a straw so I don't have to smell it
ReplyDeleteI had an amazing green smoothie with lemon and green apple (and I'm sure a bunch of other things)! The acidity really cuts through all of the leafy greens!
ReplyDeleteI have been wanting to try a green smoothie, but I'm not sure Cam would be a fan...ha :)
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to try this. I seriously need to do a detox program to clear my slate. What is it about the winter that makes healthy eating so hard!?
ReplyDeleteYup, love it, can't live without out, I got mine from Glitter Guide and use kale, blueberries and a frozen banana!
ReplyDeleteThanks for these recipes! I will try them stat.
ReplyDeleteI can only drink green smoothies for short lengths at a time, but I'm definitely feeling like I need to bring back the habit.
ReplyDeleteI definitely want to give these a try. I love all the ingredients so it has to be good.
ReplyDeleteYou left the basil story out? Ha. Told you these drinks are GOOD.
ReplyDeleteTold you they weren't so bad. :) Next time buy the frozen fruit and you can skip the ice cubes.
ReplyDeleteI just haven't had the courage to try one yet...but I might need to soon! Thanks for the inspiration :) The recipe doesn't look too terrible...
