HEALTHY HABITS

So I've made this comment on the blog before - but I'm not really into "diets". I don't believe in them, I'm not good at them, and in my opinion,  life is too short to completely cut out the good stuff. With that being said, every once in a while I take look at my habits of consumption, and see that there's a bit of room for improvement. Last week was one of those times and as a result I'm trying to make the three below changes.

one: I'm limiting my carb intake (breads, rice, pasta, cereal, pizza, etc) to one meal a day and swapping out white flour for whole wheat versions during this meal. I refuse to go crazy and count carbs in fruits and veggies, but this is a happy medium. It prevents me from having a muffin for breakfast, a sandwich + chips for lunch, and pizza or pasta for dinner, which is pretty much what was happening every day. My meals have consisted of lots of fruits, vegetables, and proteins - and I don't miss the carbs at all only miss the carbs a little bit!

two: I'm forcing myself to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. I say forcing, because I don't get thirsty.  I usually drink a latte in the morning and then NOTHING, seriously nothing, until a few sips of water with dinner. Talk about dehydrated!! I've only made it to the full 8 glasses a few times, but I'm definitely drinking a ton more than I was before. Baby steps.

three: I'm limiting my alcohol intake to once a week. I'm a girl who likes wine, and by likes, I mean love - so this has been a bit of a challenge. My body is already thanking me. Again, I refuse to give up alcohol completely, but it's nice to pick and choose when I'll be indulging in a cocktail {or two}!

Do you have any get healthy goals you're working on?

  1. I know this sounds so lame, but do you have a fun water bottle? I got a glass bkr one and have fun straws I use and just sit at my desk and drink a ton of water while emailing and on conference calls.

My get healthy goal is to work out...maybe once this week. lol. But seriously, I need to start working out.

  2. This sounds like a very healthy balance. I like the idea of carbs once a day. I should try that... my Thai food binge last night probably didn't help.

  3. Thanks for the motivation!! I too have the worst problem drinking a latte (starbucks at that) every morning, and then NOTHING until maybe dinner... NEED to have more Water!! And Don't get down on the drinking part, I refuse to drink beer as of lately (way too many calories!), the wine doesn't hurt one bit! At least that's what I tell myself :) 2-3 glasses a week max...but if you must have a cocktail try a club soda with flavored vodka (my fav is the new Absolut Wild Tea with Elderflower!Amazing) with a squeeze of lime! Super low cal and refreshing for spring/summer!!
    Always enjoy your blog!

  4. I agree with Christin--a pretty water bottle and drinking out of a straw makes it easier. I luckily love water so I am constantly downing it. I tend to use whole wheat as well with bread and pasta. The main transition I made that has made me feel a lot better is to stop eating when I'm actually full and eating better portions. I now eat smaller portions throughout the day because otherwise I would all of a sudden be starving and just non-stop eat. I don't believe it diets either because I will never cut desserts out of my diet ever. My dad always says, "Everything in moderation."

  5. I try to do these things too. It can be so hard! I'm the same way and have to force myself to drink water. Sometimes I add lemon and that helps to make the water easier to drink.

  9. Small changes like this are always a good idea! I'm trying to drink more water too, though I don't know that I have the willpower to give up my carbs (or red wine, so for that I admire you...).

    Good luck my dear!

  10. Love these. I drink water alllllllll day. I'm like a fish, so I go to the bathroom like a racehorse. I'm trying to work out very consistently. As in 4-5 days a week. Not my normal 3-4. Wish me luck?

  11. Establishing healthy habits is a much better way to go than dieting IMO. I am trying to learn moderation and babysteps rather than being all black and white, because yo-yo dieting REALLY hasn't done me any favors.

  12. I think it helps when you put all of these things down in writing. Go you. Just a few more weeks! :)

  14. Good luck with the water! I actually had that goal on my 101 in 1001 list and did it for a week straight. After a while it wasn't too bad but to be honest I didn't keep it up. I'm like you though, I drank MAYBE 1 glass of water a day... now I'm at 2-3. Baby steps, right? haha

  15. Seriously amen to all of these. I also agree that I can never cut something completely out of my diet, it is all about moderation.
