headed to california!

I realize that we JUST got back from Hawaii, but yt and I are planning our next little trip for the beginning of August. We are headed to northern California for a wedding, and are extending the weekend by a few days so that we can enjoy all that San Francisco, Napa, Sonoma, and Santa Rosa have to offer! I've never been to northern CA, and I'm pretty sure it will be close to heaven. Good food + good wine, and beautiful landscapes? Sign me up!

So I come to you, dear readers, for some travel advice. For those who have been, what are your favorite wineries, favorite restaurants and must dos in this area. We only have two extra days and we want to make sure to make the most of it! Thanks in advance, and happy Monday!

  1. I mean...lol..you'll end up being KINDA drunk so the wineries are all fun. But I LOVE the Sutter Home B&B, it is adorable. And obvi you gotta go to French Laundry!

  5. Oh I love Napa! We went for the first time in March and are going back in September. I'd suggest the Oxbow Market in Napa, anything and everything in Yountville, and doing a cave tour!

  6. Go to Thomas Keller's AD HOC Restaurant for dinner! But go to opentable.com (run, don't walk) now to make your reservation. They do a pre set menu every night and serve it family style. The food is rustic and quintessentially Napa. You will love it!!! Plus, the price is right!! Welcome to my neighborhood!!!

  7. I'm going to NorCal in 2 weeks!! My old home, so here's the skinny: wineries - Miner Family (for their red, Oracle), Schramsberg (cool cave tour, sparkling wines and their red - J.Davies is amazing!!), and Frank Family(if you like Chardonnay). In San Fran, I highly recommend Nopa for Italian. And apparently C Casa at the Oxbow Public Market (Napa) is amazing (michelin star tacos!)

  9. I wish I knew more about Northern California. You would think some of us southern Cali kids would get out more huh!?! But sadly that is not the case. I hope you have a great time out here anyhow!

  11. We took a trip to the Napa Valley last September -- it was amazing, and I can't wait to go back! Check out Mustards Grill for a great lunch (http://mustardsgrill.com/) - it's close to a few wineries, which makes it easy to pop in to! Some of my favorite wineries included Chase (http://www.chasecellars.com/), Plumpjack (http://www.plumpjackwinery.com/), Ravenswood (http://www.ravenswoodwinery.com/) and Frias (http://www.friasfamilyvineyard.com/index.html -- I believe you need to make an appointment). Definitely split tastings with your husband -- you'll still get plenty of wine, but it'll be less expensive and you'll still be able to taste a lot of different kinds without getting too tipsy!

  12. We love this area of Cali! I'd recommend a private, customized wine tour, as you learn a ton and meet the winemakers themselves, all the while tasting wine you know you'll enjoy (because you prep with your guide ahead of time). We did this through Small Lot Wine Tours and had an amazing experience! Feel free to email me if you have questions. Also, I'd second the AD HOC recommendation - Chef Keller's food for pennies compared to French Laundry :)
