I'm forcing myself to go on a little bit of a spending freeze. Nothing serious, but I've gotten into some pretty bad habits that need correcting. My spending problems are pretty easy to pinpoint.
There's the clothing: I'm a girl, and I'm a blogger, and I like to shop. After reading countless fashion blogs, and walking past every possible store front on the way to and from work, it's really easy to convince myself that not only do I need a new dress for each and every event in my life, but also that I would work out better with some new lululemon gear, and that I'd be so much cooler with a few more pops of color in my wardrobe and that girls night would be that much more fun if I were sporting some new summer sandals. Sure it's nice to feel cute, and the instant gratification of some new Kate Spade earrings is awesome - but sometimes I just need to say "no".
There's the home decor: I'm a huge home body. I spend a lot of time in my living room, almost every evening in the kitchen cooking, and I love to entertain. I'm a tad obsessed with keeping our home picture perfect, which leads to unnecessary fresh flower purchases and expensive candles for every room. Then there's the throw pillows that must compliment the walls, that must also match the vases that the unnecessary fresh flowers are in. You get the picture. It's one thing to have a nice home, it's another to spend too much time and money trying to make it look like the floor model at Crate and Barrel.
Theres the food: Yes, I like to cook. But I also dream about dining out. I have a list of about 1,000 restaurants I want to try in Chicago and then another list of 1,000 I'd like to return to. I went from bringing my lunch to work daily, to eating out almost every day {hello whole foods salad bar, sandwich shops, and afternoon trips to pinkberry}, and not only is my wallet hurting, but so is my waist line.
Here's my plan: I am surely not suggesting that any of the above are not okay - they all are, but in moderation. I'm giving myself a four week spending "freeze" to get back on track and remind myself that new fall clothes, the finishing touches on our apartment, and eating out are wants and not needs. So no new clothing purchases, no more flowers or pieces of decor for the home, and only eating out ONCE a week until after labor day. Ready, set, wish me luck :)

I've decided that on Fridays only can I buy lunch. Or only one day a week because that is my MAJOR drain right now. And yes, same with the home. I need to chillax with the money spending.
ReplyDeleteGood luck! I need to do the same...
ReplyDeleteI did this in June-July. Now my lunch eating out at work needs to be curbed - I started this week, bringing sandwiches!
ReplyDeleteWe all need to reign it in from time to time. Good luck friend! I hope one of these meals out includes me, although you know I'm happy to stay in and cook together too. Hope to see you soon! :)
ReplyDeleteI totally hear you on this! Granted it's a little easier for me to control myself since I work from home and am a little less tempted that way, but I feel like it only makes it easier for me to justify spending way too much on the weekends/when we travel! Good luck girl! xoxo
ReplyDeleteI hear ya. I really need to cut back on the eating out at restaurants (even though its my favorite), and especially the constant potbelly's runs or sushi take out when I feel too lazy to cook. And the blogging + online shopping is just too much... I see something new each day that I love - but you're right its a want not a need!

Love this! Good for you. I bought a finance organizer yesterday to get me on track. We can do it together :)
ReplyDeleteI am in the same boat as you - except I haven't considered doing a complete "freeze". I just paid off my credit card debt and couldn't really remember what I racked it all up on. Talk about a wake up call.
ReplyDeleteGood luck!! : )
You can do it!! I know it's so tough - especially being a blogger & seeing all the fine home decor & fashion trends out there. It gets rough! Just keep you eye on the prize... more $$ in your pocket and your clothes fitting back how they were ;) Good luck!
ReplyDelete"wants not needs" - such a great reminder!! good luck!!
ReplyDeleteI need to do this too especially now that I'm not working (I've been laid off since end of February). It's hard not to buy anything everytime I leave the house.
ReplyDeleteGood luck Lara :)

Good for you! Very inspired to work on my spending habits as well, as I read your post and keep nodding my head! I don’t always need the new dress or shoes, and while eating out is easier, it’s not always best for the pocket book!
ReplyDeleteI just put myself on the same plan! My husband and I both work and there isn't much to show from it since we've been living it up/spending almost all of what we make. Good luck (I know I need it too!)!
