summer staples.

i started this post because i've been obsessing about ice pops. images of ice pops have been popping up everywhere i look - magazines, blogs, pinterest.... i've seen recipes for creamy pops (complete with milk, yogurt, and iced cream), pops filled with flavorful fresh fruit, and my all time favorite - those that double as a cocktail with just a splash of your favorite liquor.

i decided that like most other things, homemade is the way to go... and purchased this ice pop mold. so now my wheels are turning... the flavor possibilities are endless. do you make ice pops at home? what are your favorite flavors? i'm going to be trying a few recipes this week.. i'll let ya know how it goes.

i thought the discussion of ice pops would be all there was to this post, until i stumbled across the below image. talk about s'mores gone terribly, terribly, right... a) dessert in a jar b) gorgeous presentation c) toasty marshmallows and chocolate and graham ? yes please, thank you very much.

so now i ask, which of the above is calling your name?

both? yes, i thought so.

Cornmeal Lime Cookies

I've been on a bit of a citrus kick lately (especially lemons and limes!) I'm not sure if it's their bright color, the tangy flavor they add to any dish, or their versatility, but I've been going through these tiny fruits by the bunches.

After a short search for a lime dessert, I stumbled across these cookies. Apparently they were made famous by Flour Bakery - a Boston staple, but are easy enough to re-create in any kitchen! I love the little confetti-like lime zest specks that show throughout the glaze. After my lemon bar catastrophe (where I ate almost an entire tray single handedly), I decided it would be best to cut this recipe in half. If you have more self control then me, here is the full recipe :)

Bake at your own risk!

Here's what you'll need...

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
3/4 cup plus two tablespoons granulated sugar
2 tablespoons finely grated lime zest (about 4 limes)
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups all purpose flour
1/2 cup medium coarse yellow cornmeal
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt

glaze
1 cup confectioners sugar
2 teaspoons water
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice (about 1 lime)
1 1/2 teaspoons finely grated lime zest (about 1 lime)

Here's what to do... (via Flour)
Position rack in the center of the over and heat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Using a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment (or a handheld mixer or a wooden spoon), cream together the butter and granulated sugar on medium speed for about 5 minutes or until light and fluffy. (This step will take 10 minutes if using a handheld mixer or a spoon). Stop the mixer a few times and use the rubber spatula to scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl and the paddle to release any clinging butter or sugar. Add the lime zest and beat on medium speed for about 1 minute to release the lime flavor. Add the eggs and vanilla and continue to beat on medium speed for 2 to 3 minutes, or until thoroughly combined. Scrape the bowl and the paddle again to make sure the eggs are thoroughly incorporated.
In a small bowl, stir together the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, and salt. On low speed (or with the wooden spoon), slowly add the flour mixture to the butter-sugar mixture and then mix until the flour is completely incorporated and the dough is evenly mixed.
Drop the dough in scant 1/4-cup balls onto a baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Flatten each ball slightly with the palm of your hand.
Bake for about 25 minutes or until the cookies are pale brown on the edges, still pale in the center, and just firm to the touch in the center. Be careful not to overbake the cookies and let the tops brown. Let cook on the baking sheet on a wire rack for 15 to 20 minutes, then transfer to the rack to cool to room temperature or just a bit warmer before glazing. (if you try to glaze the cookies while they are still hot, the glaze will run off).
To make the glaze:
While the cookies are cooling, in a small bowl, whisk together the confectioners’ sugar, water, lime juice, and lime zest until smooth. You should have about 1/2 cup. (The glaze can be made up to 1 week ahead and stored in an airtight container at room temperature). Brush the cookies with a thin layer of the glaze, then allow the glaze to set for about 10 minutes before serving or storing. The cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. The unbaked dough can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

snapshots.

the last few weeks have been the best. we've been settling into our new apartment (and married life), and starting our news jobs (me as an event coordinator and yt in his residency) and we've have down time - ohhhhh down time - how i've missed you.

i've had time to browse an antique market, make a trip to ikea, cook a bit, run a bit, meet up with friends for a drink and have date night - and it's all been lovely.

here are a few snapshots.

1 + 2 - as i've mentioned, i'm working as an event coordinator now! my two favorite parts of the job (it's hard to choose), are probably the freebie flowers and the people - wedding cake on a weekly basis is a close second :)

3 + 4 we've been working on our apartment!! a DIY jackson pollock, some anthropologie knobs, a trip to ikea and randolph street market are completing the look!

5 + 6 - a late night home made dessert :) pb chocolate chip cookies and our first dinner in the new apartment. a little grilled steak goes a long way!

7 + 8 - homemade pesto (mm mm pasta dinner) and a snacky kind of girls night!

i'm getting used to my new sunday/monday weekend ... it's not too shabby! i'm also making it official and changing my name today!! both are going to take a little bit of getting used to!

hope you all had a fabulous weekend.

do anything fun??

packing a picnic.

I've been fantasizing about having a little picnic ( when the weather is not 90 degrees and humid). I picture myself cozying up under a shady tree, or in a big grassy area in a park - and enjoying a few snacks and a beverage. Perhaps I'll bring a book, a game, or a little music. With so many possible spots close by, I hope to make this little dream a reality this summer. Doesn't it sound kind of lovely?

Here's what I would pack in my perfect picnic basket:

a little sandwich and some chips to snack on,
a refreshing beverage and something sweet,
and a few small but special touches of decor.

and of course someone special to share it all with!

what would you bring to your perfect picnic?
do you ever picnic in the summer?

Honeymoon Pictures!!

This may be part one of two. There were so many fun pictures it was hard to choose. So please bear with me as I over share a few of my favorite pictures from our honeymoon.  It was possibly the best 10 days of my life. Relaxing, quality time, with my guy cannot be beat and it was desperately needed :)

We snorkeled and swam with lots of {big} turtles - right outside of our hotel! They were so friendly and I mostly imagined them with thick Australian accents {finding nemo anyone?}

and watched lots of pretty sunsets + a few gorgeous rainbows...

and did some hiking...

more to come soon!

headed to california!

I realize that we JUST got back from Hawaii, but yt and I are planning our next little trip for the beginning of August. We are headed to northern California for a wedding, and are extending the weekend by a few days so that we can enjoy all that San Francisco, Napa, Sonoma, and Santa Rosa have to offer! I've never been to northern CA, and I'm pretty sure it will be close to heaven. Good food + good wine, and beautiful landscapes? Sign me up!

So I come to you, dear readers, for some travel advice. For those who have been, what are your favorite wineries, favorite restaurants and must dos in this area. We only have two extra days and we want to make sure to make the most of it! Thanks in advance, and happy Monday!

finishing touches.

While our apartment is in a really great spot, it still needs a few finishing touches. In addition to the artwork I mentioned on Wednesday, we're in need of a beautiful desk chair for our desk which is now in our bedroom and some fun throw pillows.

Alex is being an awesome designer friend, and is having some throw pillows made for us in this gorgeous Kelly Wearstler fabric. It will sit on our charcoal couch with grey and ivory solid throw pillows. So check and check there. They should be ready in a couple of weeks and I can't wait to get my hands on them!

I'm obsessed with a chair for our desk, and it's not cheap. I really cannot fathom spending over $500 on the below Crate and Barrel chair, especially when it will just be sitting at a desk, but I love it. The dark wood, the neutral color of the linen fabric - and the nail head trim just seals the deal. But, alas it is $500 more than I have to spend on a chair, so the search continues. If you know of a similar style chair for half the price, please do let me know!

We replaced the knobs in our kitchen with something to bring a touch of color and fun into the room. The below ceramic knobs from Anthropologie are such a happy color and make me smile every time I open a cabinet. With a few other touches of yellow here and there - this tiny space is starting to resemble a cute kitchen!

It's the little things in life that make me happy!

On a completely separate note - yesterday was my first day of work! It's only day one, but I already feel like it's going to be a great fit. I have two weddings this weekend (Friday and Saturday)!! I'm also planning a Sunday filled with cooking! It's so nice to be back in the kitchen. I made lemon bars on Wednesday and steak tacos for dinner last night. I think it's safe to say that the non diet "diet" is now non existent. Oh well!!

Happy Friday friends!

artwork.

Artwork can really change the look and feel of any home. In our new apartment, I've basically scrapped all of our old artwork and am starting from scratch. I didn't love any of it, none of it went together, and who doesn't want an excuse to go shopping for some new art! Here are some of the ideas I'm considering:

For the living room, I'm thinking about doing a large abstract piece myself over the couch. Inspired by something like the below. Our living room color scheme is black, white, and gray - but perhaps I'll throw some silver and gold in there - or one color for a pop.

I've also toyed with the idea of doing a gallery wall. You can choose from so many pictures and prints, they don't have to match completely, and it's still rather trendy. However, yt isn't a fan of the idea, and I'm not sure my hanging skills are up to par. We might wind up with eight paintings, none of them straight.

For the kitchen, I only have a small area (below the cabinets and above the counter to work with) but I'm thinking of doing a series of small framed photographs of close ups of food, like the below. I'm kind of obsessed with the vibrant colors of this avocado.

For the bedroom, I'm copying a friend and doing a DIY project for over the bed. Apparently it's not only doable (but easy) to print on burlap. I'm thinking of printing a quote across six frames above the bed (two rows of three). We're still brainstorming the perfect quote, but I'll keep you updated!

So friends, what's hanging in your home? Do you have anything you absolutely love? Prints, paintings, photography, etc?

The Rehearsal Din

I wanted our rehearsal dinner to be intimate, but above all, relaxing for both yt and myself. After considering several Chicago restaurants, we decided that the best venue of all would be at his parents home in the suburbs. I couldn't have asked for anything more. We supplied a few of the special details - DIY seating cards, lots of flowers that we couldn't use elsewhere in the wedding, and all of our favorite foods from our fave Turkish restaurant in Chicago. Add in a fire pit at dusk, best friends, lots of food and beverages and you've got the BEST rehearsal dinner.

Here are a few of my favorite pictures:

mom and sisters before the rehearsal

bride + bridesmaids at the rehearsal

siblings - love you all.

my grandma - this one is a keeper.
the best friends a girl could ask for.

I'm Back!!

Hi Friends.

A little picture from our last night in Maui...

I am back to the real world. Our wedding is over, our Hawaiian travels are complete, our apartment has been unpacked, and I have three days left before I start working again - at my new job! YT also officially became a doctor on Saturday - congratulations Dr. T!!

One month ago, I wasn't sure I could survive all of the changes (marriage, new home, new job) all at once, but I did, and every single stressful minute was worth it! I can't wait to share some of pictures with you. We won't be getting the official wedding photos back for several more weeks, but I have lots of pictures to share from family and friends :)

And, while I was away planning, and getting married, and honeymoon - summer arrived in all of its glory! I cannot wait to dine al fresco in our new neighborhood, head to Wrigley for a ball game, and bop around at Randolph Street Market and some of Chicago's amazing festivals.

To say life is good, would be quite the understatement. Life is absolutely wonderful!

P.S. I have missed cooking and blogging a lot. Lots of blogging and lots of new recipes coming your way. I'm so very happy to be back!

Get Grilling: via The Urban Slant!

Hi! Julia here from The Urban Slant. I was so so excited when the lovely Mrs. Lara asked me to post while she weds and honeymoons! (insert happy dance).

As a Chicago blogger, there is nothing I love more then summer in the city. I spend my weekends on the beach and grilling with friends and family. If I could grill out every day of the year, I would. No question.

I've put together my favorite recipes for you, and I'm even sharing my super secret skirt steak recipe that not even my parents know. It's just THAT good.

Parmesan Corn Recipe (corn is my favorite thing to grill!)
Mayo-Free potato salad Recipe (I dont like mayo, and this is a delicious take on a BBQ favorite)

Is your mouth watering yet? It is seriously the best skirt steak you will ever try. It is perfect alone, or chopped up for fajitas, sandwiches etc. It is good with EVERYTHING.

What do you like to grill in the summer?

Thanks for having me today Mrs. Lara! Be sure to stop by The Urban Slant for daily reads on design, fashion, food and everything inbetween. xo.

Grilling is one of my absolute favorite things to do in the summer - especially because you can grill virtually anything! I also love skirt steak and am definitely using this marinade next time we grill! Thanks so much Julia!!
